Biography

I'm a writer, philosopher and podcaster. My most popular book is Philosophy: The Basics (Routledge, 4th ed.), an introduction to the subject written in a straightforward style. I tried to write the book I wished I'd picked up when I was sixteen. My other books include Thinking from A to Z , Philosophy: The Classics, Freedom: An Introduction with Readings, Philosophy: the Essential Study Guide, The Art Question, and The Basics of Essay Writing. I've also edited a book about the photographer Bill Brandt and written a biography of the modernist architect Ernö Goldfinger. My latest book is A Very Short Introduction to Free Speech .

I'm Senior Lecturer in Philosophy (part time) for the Open University.

I also regulary teach courses on the Philosophy of Art for Tate Modern in London, and occasionally present programmes for BBC Radio 4 (most recently, an Archive Hour programme on distance learning, and a programme about a Rembrandt self-portrait 'Rembrandt Today').

My podcast Philosophy Bites (which I make with David Edmonds) has had over 4 million downloads. Other podcasts include Ethics Bites, Philosophy: The Classics and, for Prospect Magazine 'Everyday Philosophy'. These are all available from iTunes.
