I wrote this article 'Why Don't Our Schools Teach Philosophy?' for The Independent in 2001. It has dated very quickly. Six years later many schools offer Philosophy A/S and A Level, and even more offer offer Religious Studies A/S and A Level. Things are looking up.

Forget limiting philosophy in schools to sixth formers. My son's (state) primary school has introduced what is it calling philosophy for 9-11 year olds. It boils down to developing skills in questioning and debating arguments and in critical thinking. It has enthused the staff involved, who credit it with improving performance across the curriculum, and engaged the children concerned. As yet, my daughter's pre-school remains unphilosophised, though.
