Nigel Warburton will be interviewing Philosophy Bites interviewee Roger Scruton at 11am on Saturday 2nd September in the Philosophy Department of Blackwell Bookshop in Oxford (Norrington Room). The topic of the interview will be Human Nature. We have recorded a new Philosophy Bites interview on this topic too, which should be released in the next few months.

Nigel Warburton has launched a new podcast series Philosophy Sites, consisting of interviews about places linked with philosophers. This is also available here on iTunes.  The first episode is an interview with Ray Monk, author of Ludwig Wittgenstein: the duty of genius, on Wittgenstein's grave in Cambridge. The second episode is an interview with Jonathan Wolff, author of Why Read Marx Today?, on Marx's flat at 28 Dean Street, Soho in London. Next up is an interview with Philip Schofield on Jeremy Bentham's Auto-Icon.

  

 

David Edmonds has also launched a new podcast series, Philosophy 24/7 www.philosophy247.org and on iTunes, consisting of interviews with philosophers and specifically focusing on moral and political issues.  The first two interviews are with Rebecca Roache, and Anders Sandberg. He also has a new website at www.davidedmonds.info

 

 

Philosophy Bites Again (OUP), the third of our Philosophy Bites books, is about to appear in paperback in the UK...

The Philosophy Bites podcast is now available on Spotify - mobile site only  (as well as on iTunes, and from this site. There is also a Philosophy Bites app available from the iTunes app store, and also an Android version).

Nigel's article 'Choosing to be European' will be published in issue 14 of the New European newspaper.

Philosophy in the Bookshop (Blackwell's bookshop, Oxford)

Nigel Warburton is interviewing a number of philosophers at Blackwell's bookshop in Oxford for the series Philosophy in the Bookshop. All events are free and no booking is required. Forthcoming interviews:

Saturday 5th November 11am Blackwell's Bookshop, Oxford (free): Nigel interviews Philosophy Bites interviewee Adrian Moore on Infinity. Adrian has a 10-part BBC Radio 4 series A History of the Infinite.

Recently published

David Edmonds has edited a selection of short blogposts from the Uehiro Centre for Practical Ethics website. This has just been published as the book Philosophers Take on the World (OUP).

Big Ideas in Social Science (SAGE publishing) edited by David Edmonds and Nigel Warburton - this is based on the podcast series Social Science Bites and consists of modified transcripts of 18 interviews with social scientists, including Kate Pickett, Jonathan Haidt, Stephen Pinker, Ann Oakley, Robert J. Shiller, Bruce Hood, Robin Dunbar, David Goldblatt and others.

Philosophy Bites podcast has now had over 19.5 million downloads. Links to 280 Bites interviews  (including Social Science Bites, Ethics Bites, Bioethics Bites, Multiculturalism Bites, and Free Speech Bites). This list was updated in November 2013. Philosophy Bites is currently unfunded and we are very grateful for any donations or subscriptions via the PayPal buttons on this weblog.

David Edmonds' book on Trolley Problems and Morality Would You Kill the Fat Man? is now available.

He presented the 45 minute BBC Radio 3 feature  about Kierkegaard  'Fear and Trembling in Copenhagen'

Nigel is interviewing philosophers for the Five Books website - so far he has interviewed Sarah Bakewell on Existentialism, Simon Blackburn on David Hume, Robert Talisse on Pragmatism and Paul Russell on Free Will and Responsibility.

Philosophy Bites has now been downloaded more than 18.5 million times. We are currently entirely self-funding and looking for sponsorship. We have many interesting interviews in the pipleine, including Mike Martin on Hume's 'Of the Standard of Taste', Jessica Moss on Plato and Aristotle on Weakness of Will, and Alison Gopnik on Hume and Buddhism. David Edmonds has recently joined twitter as @DavidEdmonds100. His new book about the Trolley Problem, Would You Kill the Fat Man? is to be published this Autumn by Princeton University Press, you can be pre-order it from Amazon here. David and Nigel will be speaking at a dinner event at the Isle of Wight 'Lost at Sea' festival on 2nd September .

Nigel Warburton has recently resigned from the Open University to become a freelance philosopher, podcaster, writer. In an interview in the Philosophers' Magazine he explains his decision. Nigel was  interviewed for the BBC Radio 3 programme Night Waves on Philosophy and Public Life (from 37mins 20secs). He is currently making a BBC Radio 3 programme about Kierkegaard, to be broadcast in the Autumn, and planning 5 more episodes of the Free Speech Bites podcast for Index on Censorship. You might also be interested in his recent Aeon Magazine article about Cosmopolitanism. This summer he will be speaking  at the Wildnerness 'Now' Festival as well as at the 'Lost at Sea' event mentioned above.

In the Autumn Nigel will be leading the course 'Playing with Meaning' at Tate Modern. From late January he will be running a six-session introductory course Philosophy: The Basics in Central London (Tuesday evenings from 28th January 2014). Booking is now open and tickets are selling fast (maximum class size is 35).
