My grandfather, Reg Warburton, was in his time a pianist, orchestra leader, composer, musical director, agent, A and R man and record producer. He was pianist and later musical director for David Whitfield (who went on to have several number one hits) and appeared seven times on the Ed Sullivan Show in the U.S. He also accompanied, amongst others, Joy Nicholls, Tessie O’Shea and Joan Reagan. In 1962 he was a regular on the panel of a TV talent show called Looking for the Stars – an early prototype of The X-Factor. He also produced Paul Simon’s first LP ‘The Paul Simon Songbook’.
In 1957 he wrote a ten-part correspondence course on Popular Singing (as featured on a recent edition of BBC Radio 4’s The Archive Hour ‘I’d Like to Teach the World To…’ )…Most of his advice is still relevant to aspiring singers today. Parts of it read like a modern self-help book.
Selected extracts from this course are available for personal use here
